Scientists map genetic mutations in cancer

British scientists have mapped about 200 genetic mutations involved in breast and colon cancer, work that is likely to speed new diagnostics as well as new therapies customized for each individual patient. The researchers concluded that each tumor appears to be unique, giving credence to their conclusion that these cancers are far more complex than previously thought. And the work identified cancer genes that previously had not been identified. The report, which appears in Science, gives drug developers more targets for developing therapies that can be targeted at individual patients.
