NYT: Are community cancer research sites reliable?
Some 400 community research sites are responsible for producing more data on new cancer therapies than the combined group of prestigious academic research centers in the U.S. Their diverse demographics are highly prized by developers looking for accurate insight into the efficacy of new drugs. But the New York Times uses the case of a whistleblower at one of the sites to question whether these community programs stick to the National Cancer Institute's strict research protocols.
The Times focuses on Suzanna Stratton, PhD, who demanded that the Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL take action against its principal investigator after an audit flagged major deficiencies in 12 of 29 experiments. She was fired, she says, for making the claims, but federal officials have corroborated at least some of her accusations and are investigating others.
"I have concerns not just about patient safety, but the integrity of the data in the trials," says Stratton. "My larger concern is that there may be other community hospitals doing research that, like Carle, evolved in a vacuum."

My goal is to act as a mentor. I had earned the privilege to enroll in the NYU ultrasoundsonography program. This progam course allows students to probe out cancer and noncancerous tumors.
Secondly, before being diagnosed with a berniated disc. I was able to be employed as an oncology nurse technician during the nights.
I learned that patients have to be willing to share his or her illness. Eventhough, there are times, when it appears no one is of assistance; with common sense.
Please keep a diary of your health care.
Discuss your pain and your comfortability.
Record the medications which are entered in your port.
Record the color of your urine.
Record the number of times, when your blood has been drawn.
Request all technicians, nurses, physicians, to paraphrase-- medical care and information. To go into detail. Understanding the purpose, allows you to be apart of your healthcare.
Sometimes we as patients have to become scientists too. I am a failed spinal cord surgical patient. I too become frustrated, at the recordings which, baffle me.
But, I keep working during the difficult times. Please do not give up, on your journey to obtaining cures for cancer. You are not alone
