New source for embryonic stem cells
The UK's stem cell bank will start providing stem cells for research for the first time at the end of this month. The bank will provide embryonic as well as adult stem cell lines. The lack of stem cells has thrown big obstacles up in front of researchers, who have had to either buy them--a process considered unethical in many countries--or beg for them from fertility clinics or other sources. This new stem cell bank will create a source which requires neither buying nor begging. The bank has received about 50 requests for stem cells so far, mostly from the UK and other parts of Europe.
