New administration adds billions more for R&D
The Obama Administration clearly loves funneling new dollars into R&D, and that means billions of additional dollars for biomedical research.
In the next fiscal year beginning Oct. 1, the administration is proposing to spend $147.6 billion on R&D, $555 million higher than the current year. And that money would be supplemented with $20 billion in stimulus spending budgeted between now and the end of 2010.
These new funds are allowing the NIH to commit an additional $10 billion in biomedical research, lab improvements and new construction. And more than a billion dollars is being budgeted to get started on comparative effectiveness research.
"We in the science and technology community have done better than just about any other constituencies in the budget," said White House science adviser John Holdren. "We think that's good for the country, not just good for us."
