Johns Hopkins leads in total research spending

The National Science Foundation has calculated that researchers at Johns Hopkins completed $1.44 billion in bioscience research work in fiscal 2005, putting it at the top for total research spending at an academic center. That's not a big surprise at Johns Hopkins, though. It has hit that top spot for 27 consecutive years. The next four: The University of Michigan at $808 million; University of Wisconsin--Madison at $798 million; UCLA at $785 million and UC San Francisco at $754 million. Johns Hopkins also ranked number one in federally financed research work, with $1.27 billion drawn from the NIH and other sources. The University of Washington ranked second in federal financing with $606 million.
