Human stem cell trial set to begin in Japan

The first clinical study to put induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells into humans is set to get under way soon in Japan, where an institutional review board at the Institute for Biomedical Research and Innovation gave conditional approval. The Kobe-based Center for Developmental Biology's Masayo Takanashi will test an iPS cell-based treatment for age-related macular degeneration in a small 6-person study.
