Glaxo to double R&D staff in China
GlaxoSmithKline is making ambitious plans to expand its R&D operations in China. According to Glaxo's Carol Zhu, who runs the operation, the company will more than double the number of researchers it has on staff in China. The R&D arm will grow from a staff of 170 today to 200 by year's end and plans to reach 350 next year. The pharma giant then plans to hold staffing at that level for several years before adding new researchers.

The realist will see behind this announcement and have a hard job to suppress cynical thoughts. This is not about the wonderful scientific opportunities offered by China (or India). This is all about money. Pharma is laying off R&D staff all over Europe and the US and replacing them with cheaper versions from the East. GSK is no exception as you have reported earlier. Science is no better or worse in China but it certainly is cheaper. What is being lost however is the culture of Drug Discovery and Development that has evolved in the US and Europe. It will take time for that to develop elsewhere and in the meantime will we see any new drugs?
