Conn. fuels burst of stem cell research programs

Connecticut's decision to funnel $100 million into embryonic stem cell research has fueled a host of research programs in the state. Scientists at UConn, Yale and other research centers say that their work is fast gaining international recognition. The money is buying new scientific equipment that can't qualify for federal funds and attracting top stem cell researchers from around the country. New stem cell lines are being cultivated for research use. And it's all being done with remarkably little controversy. About the only real problem Connecticut has experienced: The panel picked to award grants was overwhelmed by the number of applications it received.
