Burnham scientist outlines ambitious development plans
As the Burnham Institute for Medical Research in Florida moves from temporary digs into a new, 178,000-square-foot facility, its top scientists have been stepping up their recruitment of fresh talent.
Scientific director Dr. Daniel Kelly told an Orlando business group that Burnham's east coast campus will grow from a dozen lead scientists and 75 staffers to 30 top scientists and 300 workers by 2016. As new researchers are added to the staff, the business model calls for more partnerships with local hospitals and universities. And new ventures will be spun off into an area incubator.
Drug development is a top priority, he says. "We've had a number of important conversations with big pharma groups," Kelly told the crowd.
