Burnham Institute gets $50M donation
The Burnham Institute for Medical Research has a big new supporter and a new name. South Dakota philanthropist T. Denny Sanford is giving the institute $50 million. And the institute is renaming itself the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute. The money, which lands on top of the $20 million that Sanford donated three years ago, will be used to finance research that can't qualify for government support. "It is transformational for us," institute Chief Executive John C. Reed told the San Diego Union-Tribune. "It's one of those once-in-a-lifetime kind of opportunities." One primary area of focus for the cash will be the institute's translational activities, moving new technology to the bedside. The money will be provided in $10 million increments over the next five years. The institute has a budget of $150 million a year. Story
