Better gene tech offers wave of new discoveries

Tools

Better technology has helped academic research groups finally hit their stride in finding major disease genes, according to this report in The New York Times. That became clear just days ago as several academic groups announced their separate discoveries of a group of genes that play a role in the development of diabetes. In one sudden leap, seven new genes have been added to the field of drug development work in a field that had been dominated Iceland's DeCode Genetics. The sudden onslaught of research is a sign that the promise of the human genome project is finally being realized. But researchers agree that there's still a long way to go in identifying variant genes that trigger disease and offer targets for a new generation of drugs.
